About Fiscafornia
Fiscafornia ingests and aggregates California public fiscal data — the state's GDP, its tax revenue, and where the budget is appropriated — and keeps its own growing record so the trends are here on day one. This is Phase 0: the vital signs. The money-trail — following a dollar from tax to fund to agency to program to vendor, and labelling exactly where the public trail goes cold — is what the foundation is built for.
Sources (Phase 0)
- Macro economy: FRED — the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Open Data API — for California GDP, unemployment, employment, income, and state tax collections. The underlying series are US-government public domain (BEA / BLS / FHFA / Census).
- State spending: California eBudget (ebudget.ca.gov) — agency appropriation rollups and the revenue→spending sankey. Public domain. Dollar figures are reported in thousands; we normalize to dollars on ingest.
- Revenue: CDTFA Open Data Portal — monthly sales & use tax net cash to the General Fund, and taxable sales. Licensed CC BY.
Honest about freshness
California fiscal data is monthly at best, mostly quarterly or annual, and deep spending detail lags a year or more. Every number here carries the data period it represents. When an adapter has no API key configured, or a source hasn't returned data yet, it shows as "dark" rather than blank or faked.
